Romania is situated in southeast central Europe and is bordered by Hungary, Ukraine, Moldavia, Serbia and Bulgaria. It is also on the Black Sea coast. The Danube River ends its journey in Romania where it flows into the Black Sea. Geographically it is intersected by the Carpathian Mountains of which the highest point is 2545 metres/8345 feet and has one of the largest areas of undisturbed forests in Europe.

Tourism is an important industry for Romania and it offers many varied attractions to entice the visitor. Its capital, Bucharest is located in the southern part of the country. It is known for its wide tree-lined boulevards and was in its heyday called “Little Paris” due mainly to its Belle Époque architecture. It is a bustling metropolis which has evolved since its Communist-era days. Some of the most interesting venues are the Calea Victoriei area with its old and most charming cobblestone streets, the historic Revolution Square, the scene of the revolt against Ceausescu in 1989 and the Lipiscani District, a jumble of streets, now home to art galleries, antique shops, and coffee houses.

Transylvania may conjure up interesting images in one’s mind and it is true, Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula was inspired by the medieval castle located on a rocky hill in Bran here. However, there is much more to Transylvania than Dracula although the region is known for its numerous imposing castles. There are a number of medieval towns, some of the best preserved in Europe and some of which have achieved UNESCO World Heritage status.

Brasov has a strong medieval ambience with Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance influences. It was settled way back in history by the Saxons who left their mark here including the largest Gothic church in Rumania, the Black Church. Sighisoara is probably the best preserved medieval town in the country and a 16th Century gem with its cobblestone streets and ornate churches. It has been likened to Vienna and Prague for the atmosphere. Sibiu is the largest of the several walled and fortified towns in Rumania. It has retained its grandeur of earlier times. Another typical town is Viscri which has an old fortified Saxon church dating back to 1100 AD.

The Black Sea offers several seaside resorts of which the best known is Mamaia the only beach in Europe with pure white sand.
