Thunder Bay Vacations, Trips & Travel Packages

  • Suspension bridge in Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay is the most populous municipality in Northwestern Ontario and is often referred to as the “Canadian Lakehead'' because of its location on Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. The city’s origins as a Finnish community go back to the 1870s when Finns began to emigrate to North America. In fact, their descendants constitute the largest Finnish community outside of Finland!

A gateway to Northwest Ontario and over 500,000 square kilometres of the rugged Canadian wilderness with 150,000 lakes, rivers and streams, Thunder Bay is a popular base for outdoor adventures like fishing, boating, hiking, skiing, and golfing.

Thunder Bay's main tourist attraction is Fort William Historical Park, a reconstructed fur trade post, looking much as it did in 1815. Hands-on experiences include paddling a voyageur canoe on the Kaministiquia River, firing a musket, eating freshly baked bread, and playing a game of lacrosse.

For something a little different, take a guided or self-guided tour of an area of amethyst mine and collect your own amethyst!

Thunder Bay Art Gallery specializes in First Nations art. Located in a historic building, the Thunder Bay Museum features six galleries of heritage exhibits, including several depicting the early years of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario.

Try a few of the famous regional foods: Persian baked goods from The Persian Man Bake Shop or Finnish Pancakes from Hoito or Rooster’s Bistro. Or book a tour of Thunder Oak Cheese Farm, famous for its gouda. On Saturdays stroll the Thunder Bay Country Market and talk to farmers, producers, and local artisans.

End your day with dinner at Bight restaurant at Prince Arthur's Landing. This fine, yet casual dining place offers meals like Atlantic salmon, lamb, and squash risotto while basking in the views of the sparkling Thunder Bay waterfront.
