Valletta, Malta’s capital and a World Heritage site has been described as an open-air museum with its baroque architecture. The city is today one of the country's main tourist attractions on Malta vacations with its bastion walls, dense clusters of worn limestone buildings, timber balconies and imposing Churches. The Valletta Peninsula has two natural harbours, Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour. The Grand Harbour is Malta's major port.

The architecture of Valletta's streets and piazzas ranges from mid-16th century Baroque to Modern. The city is the island's principal cultural centre and has a unique collection of churches, palaces and museums. Buildings of historic importance include St John's Co-Cathedral, formerly the Conventual Church of the Knights of Malta. It was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578. The church is considered to be one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Europe and one of the world's great cathedrals. It has the only signed work and the largest painting by Caravaggio.

The Grandmaster's Palace (officially referred to as The Palace) is located in Valletta. It currently houses the Office of the President of Malta and the House of Representatives as well as is a heritage site. It was built in 1570 and named after Grandmaster Jean Parisot de Valette, the founder of the city. Over the years, the Palace was enlarged and developed by successive Grandmasters to serve as their official residence. During the British period, it served as the Governor's Palace.

Another excellent attraction in Valletta on Malta vacations is its waterfront. You can take a spectacular walk along the seafront around the outside of the city walls. If you go to the mooring place where the ferry for Sliema leaves, you can walk over the rocks toward the tip of the peninsula

At night in St George's Square, there is a lovely water fountain with coloured spouts of water which pop up and down

A hive of business activity during the day, the city slows down at night with its gentle lighting.
