Our Barcelona Tours

Barcelona is the capital and largest city of Catalonia and Spain's second-largest city. It is located directly on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Barcelona's official languages are Catalan and Spanish. However, most signs are indicated only in Catalan because it is established by law as the administrative language. Yet, Spanish is also widely used in public transport and other facilities. Most locals are bilingual in Catalan and Spanish and instinctively address foreigners in Spanish. In 1992, Barcelona gained international recognition by hosting the Olympic Games. This had the effect of changing the city with neighbourhoods being renovated. For visitors, this has translated into the very modern, yet also incredibly old city you see now on Spain holidays. The new elements work to preserve complement. and celebrate the old.

Barcelona Trip Highlights

This very attractive city is full of outdoor markets, restaurants, shops, museums and churches and is excellent for walking around plus it has an extensive and reliable Metro system for more far-flung destinations. The centre of the city is focused around the Ciutat Vella ("Old City") which allows the visitor to experience the life of Barcelona while the beaches that the city was built on provide sun and relaxation during the long periods of agreeably warm weather. Las Ramblas is a beautiful tree-lined pedestrian walkway and the busiest and most lively street in the city. Often called Les Rambles because it is actually a series of several different streets each called 'Rambla de …’ of which the sections each have a distinctly different feel. Placa Reial, near Las Ramblas, is where one can enjoy a sangria and is a great place to sit, relax and drink especially in the evenings on a trip to Spain.

Placa de Catalunya

As you get closer to Placa Catalunya, you will find more street performers, including those in costume. Towards the pier, there are artists who do pencil drawings, paintings, etc. La Placa de Catalunya is the epicentre of the city connecting all the major streets. The Square is known for its fountains and statues plus the shops that surround it. A favourite meeting spot for locals is the El Portal de l'Angel. This large pedestrian walkway is one of the most expensive streets in all of Spain and offers visitors many new and stylish shops.

Barceloneta

For a pleasant excursion while on a holiday in Spain, the Harbour Cable Car aerial tramway connects Montjuic which overlooks the city, to Barceloneta, the harbour region that was heavily revitalized and turned into a beach suburb for the 1992 Olympic Games. It starts in Barceloneta on the top of the 78-metre/255 feet tall Torre San Sebastian tower, which has also a restaurant at the top.

Sagrada Familia

No one can visit Barcelona and not be aware of the renowned architect, Antoni Gaudi. His uniquely whimsical architectural style is to be seen all over the city. Gaudi was born a Catalan and produced some of the most moving buildings and works of art still standing. While many were controversial in their day, they’ve since become icons, beloved by locals and Spaniards alike. The most famous is the Sagrada Familia, one of the most famous and breathtaking locations to visit in Barcelona. Although still incomplete a century after it was begun, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the outside, visitors will be astonished by the sheer height and intricacy of the design of the church, and while slow and filled with detail, the progress that has been made is impressive. The project began nearly a century ago. The height of the church will be, once it is finished, exactly equal to the height of the largest mountain in the nearby hills. The height is overwhelming when standing at its base and the inside of this masterpiece is even more impressive. Other Gaudi architecture includes the Parc Guell with its unusual layout and ornamentation and the apartment buildings of La Pedrera/Casa Milà and La Casa Batllo both of which can be visited internally.

Montserrat

Many travellers on trips to Spain don’t realize how many great day trips are located close to Barcelona. Perhaps chief among these, Montserrat lies in the beautiful Montserrat mountain range. A beautiful monastery stands at the centre of the mountain range where visitors can attend masses that include wonderful live church choirs, composed of young men who live at the monastery.

Figueres

Figueres is a small city in Catalonia. It has a wealth of history spanning many centuries that has been preserved and reflected in several museums in the area as well as in the compact Old Town. The city's main attraction is the world-famous museum and theatre of a native son, Salvador Dalí. After the Prado in Madrid, it is the most visited museum in all of Spain.

Costa Brava

Girona is an ancient town several thousands of years old. The town has an attractive Jewish quarter. Girona is said to consistently win a country-wide poll of citizens as their preferred city to live in. The Old Town is on the east bank of a river, with narrow pedestrian streets surrounded by old city walls. The Costa Brava is a coastal region starting at Blanes which is only 60 kilometres/37 miles northeast of Barcelona, boasting excellent beaches while on a trip to Spain. Other well-known resorts are Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar.
